Who Is Included In Inclusive Illinois
Who Is Included In Inclusive Illinois Source: http://www.maths.leeds.ac.uk/undergraduate/study-abroad/partner-institutions.html There has been a lot of talk about âInclusive Illinoisâ in the past year, and it has sparked a debate on what this slogan means, and how we can bring it to life here at the University of Illinois. Last January the university made national news (and Buzzfeedâs highlight reel) when students angry about the lack of a snow day sent out racist tweets about Chancellor Wise. The Chancellor graciously replied that although the tweets were offensive, and far less than she would expect from students, they were a form of protected speech. It was important, she said, that the university âshould be home to diverse ideas and differing perspectives, where robust â" and even intense â" debate and disagreement are welcomed.â Fast-forward six months to the controversy surrounding the hiring of Professor Steven Salaita, when Dr. Salaita was âunhiredâ for posting tweets denouncing the Israeli bombing of Gaza. Inclusive Illinois was invoked on both sides of the controversy. Pro-Israel activists denounced Salaita as an anti-Semite (ironic given that several of the tweets were directly about overuse of that label) and said they would feel unsafe if he was on campus. On the other side proponents of academic freedom called for a university that would respect all views, reminding Chancellor Wise of her statements about diverse ideas and different perspectives made in January. Questions of donor influence, the opinions of Palestinian Americans, faculty hiring procedures and the difference between personal and professional spheres erupted into a protest movement that has put the university on the defensive in these recent months. At the center of all of these questions- what does it mean to be inclusive? Who are we including? What is diversity? This month the Students for Justice in Palestine Club has held several meetings about bringing Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (commonly referred to as BDS) against Israel to campus in response to the recent conflict in Gaza. Two days after their first meeting, a resolution was on the floor of the student senate to disallow any BDS campaigns on the grounds that they violated the principles of Inclusive Illinois, despite the fact that traditionally boycotting has been one of the most famous forms of non-violent protest (think Montgomery Bus Boycott). I donât have the ultimate answer to what Inclusive Illinois means, or what it should. On all of these (and the many other) issues that we face as a university, there are widely differing viewpoints. But I think its time we sat down and realized that Inclusive Illinois is quickly becoming little more than a cute alliteration. It is continuously co-oped for the purposes of the person speaking, with little deeper investigation of a commitment by the university community to diversity, including a diversity of ideas. The use of Inclusive Illinois to justify or deride every decision on campus in the last semester has simply served to water it down. Now what was once a goal and a promise has become little more than a slogan. Should I Take the GMAT or GRE
Should I Take the GMAT or GRE If youre applying to graduate school, youre probably thinking about taking an entrance exam as part of your application. For law school, its the LSAT. For medical school, its the MCAT. For other graduate programs, the choice may not be as straightforward, especially if youre applying to business school. This may lead you to ask, Should I Take the GMAT or GRE? Deciding if you should take the GMAT or GRE ultimately depends on a number of factors. In addition to the GMAT, most MBA programs now accept the GRE as well. So which exam should you select? Here are four areas to consider: 1. What are your GMAT and GRE strengths and weaknesses? Both the GRE and the GMAT contain sections that assess similar abilities in the following areas: Analytical Writing Verbal Quantitative However, they are different tests that work for different test-takers. For example, for students who arent fond of writing, the GMAT has only one essay, compared to the GRE, which has two essays. For students who are excel at vocabulary words, the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE plays to that strength. Next, the Quantitative sections on both tests essentially call upon high school math skills, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. However, the Quantitative questions on the GRE might be seen as easier, especially since the GRE provides an on-screen calculator for those sections. The GMAT only provides an on-screen calculator for Integrated Reasoning, a section which may benefit students who are particularly skilled at analyzing and synthesizing different information. At the end of the day, there are tradeoffs for each exam when it comes to utilizing your strengths and weaknesses. [RELATED: GRE Tips for Test Day] 2. How do past test-taking experiences relate to what youll face on the GMAT and GRE? The GMAT is computer adaptive by question. You can only move forward in a section once you answer the question in front of youand you cant check your previous answers. So, if you can answer a question on an exam and move on to the next without further thought, you may be more comfortable with the structure of the GMAT. Conversely, the GRE is computer adaptive by section. Your performance on your first Verbal section determines the difficulty of your second Verbal section. Same goes for the Quantitative sections. However, when working within a section, you can skip questions in that section and check your answers in that section. Therefore, if you need time to review your answers and skip harder questions, the GRE may work better for your test-taking style. 3. Do the programs you are applying to accept the GMAT or GRE? Most business schools accept both the GMAT and GRE, and many schools view them with equal weight. Look at the GMAT and GRE score ranges of each school and see how you would fit in. Then, check with your schools to learn which test they prefer, and which test they prefer from you. For instance, applicants with mathematical backgrounds like engineering or computer analytics may not need to further prove they can handle the quantitative rigor of an MBA program by earning a high score on the GMATbut an applicant from a more creative background might be encouraged to display his or her mathematical ability through their GMAT performance. Admissions committees want to know that the students they accept will have the necessary skills to succeed in business school. 4. How could the GMAT or GRE affect the career you are pursuing? Some companies in industries like consulting and investment banking may ask for candidates GMAT scores during recruiting season. These companies are looking for MBA associates who can keep up with the analytical demands of their culture. So, before applying to business schools, do research on companies you want to work for after graduation, and find out their requirements. This research can also help inform your MBA applications as well as your career exploration while in your program. With all of this in mind, should you take the GMAT or the GRE? If all things are equal, go with the exam with which you simply feel more comfortable. Take GRE practice tests and GMAT practice tests to get a feel for themlook at your results, consider what your schools are looking for, think about how that score will fit into your application package, and determine whether you would like to move forward with the GMAT or GRE. Whichever test you select, prepare for it well in advance so you can perform your best on exam day!
Top Tips for Combating the Back-to-School Blues
Top Tips for Combating the Back-to-School Blues This post is part of our 2017 Back-to-School Series. Throughout the month of August, visit the Varsity Tutors blog for back-to-school advice, tips, and tricks for all ages. Having to gear up for a return to hard work and saying goodbye to the nice weather and relaxation of summer is enough to make anyone sad. If your children are feeling down or are having some anxiety about heading back to school this year, dont fret! Tips for combating the back-to-school blues include encouraging students to reconnect with friends, helping them prepare for their new schedule, and promoting positive thinking as school begins. Remember, the back-to-school blues are entirely normal and can be alleviated with a little time, re-framing, and some thoughtful preparation. Here are top tips for combating the back-to-school blues: 1. Tackle back-to-school shopping together Recruit your children to come with you when you do their back-to-school shopping. Not only will they get the chance to choose new clothes and to personalize their supplies, its also an easy way to introduce them to finances. Set a budget for their school supplies and clothing, and help them learn to prioritize by balancing the things they really want with savings elsewhere. You can even suggest that overall savings at the end of the shopping trip go toward a treat. Creating a sense of ownership over school notebooks, personal style, and locker decorations can go a long way toward building enthusiasm for the new school year. 2. Reconnect with school friends when going back to school Sometimes summer break can interrupt school friendships, especially if those students live farther away, or your children never got around to hanging out with that person outside of the classroom. Encourage them to get in contact with friends theyre going to see again at school, and to organize a playdate or get-together of some kind. Even just emailing to compare schedules or classroom assignments can help to relieve some anxiety about going back to school. 3. Prep for the new back-to-school schedule Start getting your children prepared for the shock of a more rigid schedule by slowly setting earlier bedtimes, wake-up times, and perhaps even doing a run-through of the morning routine. To help your student feel more comfortable, you can also: Visit the school Check out the new classroom Get a feel for the layout of the building or the schedule of classes. If teachers are around, meet them ahead of time. Familiarity with the new routine and surroundings will help decrease anxiety and stress on the first day. [RELATED: Tips for Helping Children Change Schools] 4. Talk through more serious back-to-school concerns Its also important to make sure that the back-to-school blues are just normal anxieties about the future, or sadness that summer is over. Talk to your children about why theyre feeling a little down about returning, and listen for signs of more serious concerns like bullying or social isolation that could be causing your children to dread returning. Talk through normal anxieties and try to reframe them by reminding students of fun things or successes that happened last year. If you sense that your students have a deeper reason for not wanting to go back, talk to them about it, and create a plan for them that is communicated with any teachers (and even administrators, if appropriate). [RELATED: 5 Questions to Ask Your Students New Teacher] 5. Make plans for summer in the fall to combat back-to-school blues Oftentimes, back-to-school blues happen simply because your children had so much fun over the summer. Work with them to make plans for summertime fun even after school has started: family outings, trips to the ice cream stand, unstructured get-togethers with friends, or hikes and other outdoor activities. Just because school has started doesnt mean its suddenly the dead of winter, or that every free moment must be dedicated to homework. Plan something for the first weekend after school starts to help ease the transition. 6. Fight down in the dumps back-to-school thinking If your children are making blanket declarations about how school is constantly the worst, remind them of times theyve had fun with a school project, a new teacher they like, or events like school dances that dont happen during the summer that they can look forward to. It can also help to remind them of some of the less fun things about summer, like mosquito bites, boredom, or sibling fights that theyll be able to avoid once theyre back in school. With a little foresight and preparation, helping your children find ways to look forward to a new school year is easily accomplished. Re-frame the return with new school supplies, reminders of good friends, accomplishments, and fun, and you can most likely count on at least one smile for that first-day photograph.
